Happy 125th Anniversary LABOR DAY!

This year we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Labor Day holiday. Has it really been around that long?!

Labor Day officially became a federal holiday in June 1894 and was enacted to honor the American labor movement.  Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day an official public holiday.  By the time it became a federal holiday, thirty U.S. states officially adopted and celebrated Labor Day.

Labor Day has often been called "the unofficial end of summer". Many families take their yearly vacations around this time of year, just to have one last 'fling' before the kids go back to school and the season changes.

So, here's to the hard-working American; the backbone of our country! Enjoy the long holiday weekend!

Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing. – Thomas Jefferson

The High Price of Distracted Driving

As of April 22nd, 2019, Arizona became the 48th state to ban texting while driving.  According to a study by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,450 people were killed in distracted driving-related vehicle accidents in 2016, meaning 9% of all the fatal crashes this year involved distracted driving; and 14% of these crashes involved a fatality.
What is distracted driving?
Distracted driving is anything that diverts your attention away from driving.  A few examples are:
  • Eating or drinking
  • Talking or texting on a cellphone
  • Fiddling with a stereo, navigation or entertainment system
  • Talking with someone in the vehicle
  • Putting on make-up
  • Grabbing something off the floor or backseat
The same study found that texting and driving is six times more dangerous than driving intoxicated. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.
What can we do?
Parents: Lead by example; talk with children about distracted driving and the consequences; sign a family pledge not to drive distracted.
Teens: Speak up when they see a friend or peer driving distracted; have friends sign a pledge; share message on social media.
Educators: Remind students about the dangers of distracted driving. Post posters and hand out materials relating to distracted driving.
Employers:  Institute a company policy restricting texting, eating or any other form of distracted driving while operating company vehicles or while using their own vehicle for company business.

Cyber Extortion Up in 2018

According to Proofpoint’s newest Quarterly Threat Report, Q4 2018, the threat of Ransomware did decline at the end of 2018, but has opened the door for out-right cyber extortion.

Extortion is an age-old crime that has found its way into the cyber world.  This threat continues to gain traction as a multi-million-dollar criminal industry. The newest trend is in the form of “sextortion,” in which a cyber-criminal threatens to reveal compromising information (i.e. photos, videos or visits to questionable websites) if the victim does not pay a fee. They may even claim to have “evidence” of compromising activities. These emails generally do not contain malware or a malicious link and rely solely on fear, emotion and the human factor to trick victims into paying.

As the threat of cyber extortion continues to grow, staying one step ahead is your best recourse in combating this ever-increasing threat. Addressing your organizations’ vulnerabilities, developing appropriate policies and procedures, using up-to-date technology to secure your networks and securing the right insurance coverage are integral parts in your risk management arsenal.

When Insuring Your Foster Care Agency ~ Contact A Specialist!

As of September 2016, there were an estimated 437,465 children in foster care system. As a foster care agency, you are invested in the lives of children who are living with past neglect, abuse or trauma. Reuniting them with their biological families or finding a loving adoptive family is at the heart of your mission.
Many foster care agencies are facing increased premiums or non-renewal notices from their insurance carriers due to the high-risk factors associated with foster care, as well as an increase in lawsuits and high settlement amounts.  The insurance markets are shrinking, and many brokers are finding it difficult to secure insurance for their foster care clients.
As the first brokerage in the country to specialize in adoption and foster care, Hawley & Associates continues to be a leader in providing foster care agencies with the comprehensive insurance programs they need to perform their important mission.

ACTIVE SHOOTER INSURANCE - Hawley & Associates

The US Department of Homeland Security defines an active shooter as someone “actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area”.

Active shooter situations are unpredictable and can happen quickly.  Sadly, the likelihood of an active shooter event is real and Active Shooter Insurance to be a should be a part of your risk management arsenal.

Many GL policies fall short & may leave your organization vulnerable and under-covered in the case of a lawsuit.  Your insurance program should include a comprehensive policy that fills in the gaps where your GL policy leaves off.

Active Shooter Insurance covers:
  • Liability and extra expenses tied to attacks or threats, such as: business income interruption, counseling, public relations and additional/temp security measures
  • Victim death benefits
  • Medical/rehab/funeral and psychiatric expenses
  • Extends to a wide-range of attacks, including: vehicular, explosives and acid attacks
  • Limits available from 1 million to 100 million.
A solid risk management plan along with a comprehensive insurance program can help you respond and recover from the unexpected.

Foster Care Agency Insurance Specialists - Hawley & Associates

As a foster care agency, you are invested in the lives of children who are living with past neglect or abuse. In helping find these children stability by reuniting them with their biological families or finding an loving adoptive family, you are committed to making the world a better place, one child at a time.

There are some important questions to ask yourself concerning the risks, exposures and protection of your agency. Does your broker understand the intricacies of a foster care agency?  Are they able to evaluate and assess your exposure to the risk of sexual abuse?  Is he/she aware that it is also considered sexual abuse if the parent or guardian has failed to adequately protect the child from sexual abuse when the parent or guardian knew or reasonably should have known that the child was in danger?

Hawley & Associates understands these risks and is knowledgeable about the specialty insurance products available to protect your agency, including "Foster Parent Professional" coverage, that protects the foster parents as well.

Local Broker vs. Specialty Broker?

Hawley & Associates strongly believes in giving back to the community.  We encourage the support of local businesses and services operating in the areas that we all live and work.  But, when it comes to your insurance broker, you may need to think beyond your hometown borders.

Did you know that having a local broker could actually be a detriment to your organization, not a benefit?  A local broker may not have the necessary knowledge of important state/federal statutes, coverage limitations, a strong relationship with key carriers and access to specialty markets.

Hawley & Associates provides specialized insurance products and services for nonprofits, human service and social service organizations all across the country.  Our expertise gives us a broader view and understanding of the insurance industry and how it affects your organization.  It is our job to stay current on all changes in your industry and to keep your organization and mission protected.
