Is Compliance Really the Goal of Childhood Behavior?

Compliance is a word that is used regularly in the world of behavior. It’s written about in Individualized Education Programs, it’s used as a goal when students have behavioral episodes, and data is collected on how often it does or does not occur. Even in personal interactions with kids, such as with our own children at home, we often place a more significant weight on compliance than we do decision-making.
“Listen and obey.”
“Do as I say.”
“Because I said so.”
“Don’t argue with me.”
Think about the kind of message that is sending kids. Are we conveying a message that obeying is more important than making decisions or thinking critically? When compliance is the primary focus, we’re instilling in kids’ minds that the lesson to be learned is how to follow instructions. And while that is a crucial life skill all must learn; it must also be taught alongside the evaluative process. Some of the most influential people in history have only made an impact because they refused to blindly follow the demands of authority figures in unjust moments. Without their critical thinking, which led to their active disobedience, we never would have had the social progress brought about by Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, Malala Yousafzai or Nelson Mandela.
Focusing solely on pure obedience, or working entirely toward compliance, steals a child’s ability to develop critical thinking skills. Those critical thinking skills are what kids use to keep themselves safe. If that instinctual willingness to disobey is completely suppressed, kids are less likely to report someone who is abusing them, less able to interpret their own fight-or-flight instincts in emergency situations and less willing to create significant social changes in their communities.
So how do we go about instilling these crucial traits while also avoiding argumentative and entitled behavior?
It starts by giving kids options. Instead of telling kids what they can and cannot do, try laying out several options out in front of them and asking what would happen if they chose each option. Help them in making the connection between actions and consequences and they in turn will become more confident in making the right decisions. Kids are more willing to make decisions that we give them credit for.
Oftentimes, when kids disobey or make “bad” choices, it’s not because they want to be harmful or disruptive. It’s because they have not connected their actions to the correct negative consequences, yet. It’s the job of parents, teachers, coaches and advocates to help kids in making those connections, giving them opportunities to learn by trial and error, and helping them process scenarios they might not yet be mature enough to process on their own.

Foster Parent Liability Insurance

Being a foster parent today can be more challenging than ever, as many foster children come into the system already abused or neglected.  Allegations of abuse in the foster care system are not uncommon. In 2016, approximately 4.1 million allegations of child abuse and neglect were made to child protective service agencies.

According to the National Foster Parent Association, adoptive parents have a 1 in 8 chance of being falsely accused of abuse or neglect.  Lawsuits can be brought by the biological parent, the child, or others arising out of the foster parent/child relationship.

Every responsible foster parent should consider Foster Parent Liability Insurance, which defends foster parents from allegations of abuse. Attorney fees, defense costs and award judgments can rack up thousands of dollars, even if they are unsubstantiated.

For more information on this important coverage, please contact Hawley & Associates.

New Year’s Resolutions vs. Goals ~ What Is The Difference?

A new year always seems to spur a little something in all of us.  A new year, a new you, right?  Many people vow to dust off the old treadmill and get into shape. Some may vow to get their finances in order or to run a marathon. This is where the infamous 'resolution' comes into the picture.
Resolutions tend to be all of nothing and most people don’t plan on how to sustain that resolution the whole year.  Some estimates say that about 40% of Americans make a new year’s resolution, but only about 8% of people succeed.
Instead of resolutions, try setting goals.  The definition of a goal is ‘an observable and measurable result having one or more objectives to be achieved within a more or less fixed time frame’.  Goals can provide a direction to follow to achieve a desired outcome.  Paying attention to how we set goals makes us more likely to achieve them.
Here are Five Golden Rules for Goal Setting:
  1. Set Goals That Motivate You: Set goals that are a high priority in your life, which will maximize the likeliness of success.
  2. Set SMART Goals:  Specific; Measurable; Attainable; Relevant; Time Bound
  3. Set Goals in Writing: This makes your goals tangible and real.
  4. Make an Action Plan: Write out individual steps and cross off your list when completed.  You can see your progress!
  5. Stick with It:  Remember, your goal won’t happen overnight.  Reward yourself for little goal met and take time to review your goals.
Here’s to a happy and healthy 2019!

September is National Recovery Month

September is National Recovery Month and we would like to help create awareness and understanding of substance abuse issues in our country, as well as celebrating those in recovery and those who work in prevention and treatment.

According to reports, 20.2 million adults suffer from substance abuse.  Of these, 7.9 million suffer from a co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorder.  Opioid overdoses accounted for more than 42,000 death in 2016, more than any previous year.

There is no standard form of treatment and therefore difficult to measure the success rate of ‘rehab’.  The process of recovery is very personal and differs from person to person, but recovery IS possible.

As an specialized insurance broker, we are honored to work directly with organizations who dedicate themselves in serving those struggling from substance and mental health disorders.  Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your important mission in helping individuals reclaim and transform their lives.

ACTIVE SHOOTER INSURANCE - Hawley & Associates

The US Department of Homeland Security defines an active shooter as someone “actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area”.

Active shooter situations are unpredictable and can happen quickly.  Sadly, the likelihood of an active shooter event is real and Active Shooter Insurance to be a should be a part of your risk management arsenal.

Many GL policies fall short & may leave your organization vulnerable and under-covered in the case of a lawsuit.  Your insurance program should include a comprehensive policy that fills in the gaps where your GL policy leaves off.

Active Shooter Insurance covers:
  • Liability and extra expenses tied to attacks or threats, such as: business income interruption, counseling, public relations and additional/temp security measures
  • Victim death benefits
  • Medical/rehab/funeral and psychiatric expenses
  • Extends to a wide-range of attacks, including: vehicular, explosives and acid attacks
  • Limits available from 1 million to 100 million.
A solid risk management plan along with a comprehensive insurance program can help you respond and recover from the unexpected.

Contact Hawley & Associates for more information.

Extended Reporting Periods - When Does It Apply To Your Nonprofit?

When a nonprofit chooses to close its doors, it may require a special coverage that could add an additional unforeseen insurance cost. This is especially true for the nonprofit that offers specialized professional services like adoption, therapeutic foster care, mental or behavioral health, or skilled medical care. Professional services are insured under a specific type of coverage form called a claims-made p...olicy and it responds differently to a claim then the traditional, better known and understood occurrence policy.
